Abay lies in Karaganda Region in central Kazakhstan, within the Karaganda coal basin. It grew as a mining town during the Soviet period, and its layout shows that history. From above the streets form a fairly regular, planned pattern, with residential blocks, broad roads and industrial areas set out across flat ground.
The steppe around the town is wide and open, broken mainly by mine workings, rail lines and roads leading toward the city of Karaganda to the north-east. On a map that emptiness frames the town sharply. The grid of streets sits like a deliberate shape on an otherwise blank plain.
The town shares its name with Abai Kunanbaev, Kazakhstan's best-known poet.
