Abnūb lies in Asyut Governorate in Upper Egypt, on the eastern side of the Nile valley. Here the band of cultivated land is narrow and the desert is never far away. From above, the town is a compact mass of streets inside a patchwork of irrigated fields, bounded by water on one side and dry plateau on the other.
Like many towns in this part of the valley, Abnūb has long lived from agriculture. Canals and field boundaries shape everything around it, and the roads follow them in straight, deliberate lines. It is the seat of a district of villages scattered across the same fertile strip.
