Abuyog is on the eastern coast of Leyte, in the Philippines' Eastern Visayas region, facing the open water of Leyte Gulf. On a map the town centre, or poblacion, is a compact cluster of streets near the shoreline. The coastal highway runs through it, heading north toward Tacloban and south along the coast. Inland, the street pattern thins quickly into farmland and wooded hills.
The coastline shapes the whole composition. Barangays follow the shore as a chain of small settlements, and rivers come down from the interior to meet the gulf, cutting short breaks into the coastal strip. The town's inner grid is modest and regular. It is organised around a central plaza and church, a layout found in many Visayan towns.
An Abuyog map poster works because of that balance between sea and land. Leyte Gulf is widely remembered for the Allied landings and the naval battle of 1944. The main road runs parallel to the shore and threads the poblacion and neighbouring barangays together. On the map it is the strongest single line, a spine the town hangs from.
Rivers from the interior
Streams and rivers descend from the forested uplands to the gulf. Their winding courses break up the coastal strip and add fine, organic lines to the otherwise simple street pattern.
