Acaraú lies on the northern coast of Ceará in Brazil, near the point where the river of the same name reaches the Atlantic. The town sits on low ground, and the river winds through the landscape in wide loops before meeting the sea.
On the map, the town is a compact grid on the river's edge. Channels and mangrove areas break up the ground around it. Toward the coast, beaches and dunes stretch along a flat shoreline, and small fishing communities sit beside the water. Fishing, including lobster fishing, has long shaped the local economy.
