Adré lies in Chad's Ouadaï region, very close to the border with Sudan and the Darfur town of El Geneina. From above, it appears as a loose grid of sandy streets and compounds spread across flat Sahelian terrain, crossed by seasonal watercourses that run only during the rains.
Its position on the frontier has long made it a crossing and trading point. Since 2023, Adré has received very large numbers of people fleeing conflict in Sudan, and camps and settlements around the town have become a major focus of humanitarian work.
