Akouda lies in the Sousse Governorate, a short distance north of Sousse on Tunisia's Sahel coast. Like many towns in the region it has a tightly packed historic centre, where narrow lanes turn at sharp angles, surrounded by newer neighbourhoods laid out on straighter lines. Outside the town, the ground is divided into orchards and olive groves.
From above, the contrast between these zones is very clear. The old core is a dark, dense patch of short streets, while the outer districts open into longer blocks and wider roads heading toward the coast and toward Sousse. The Mediterranean shoreline and the resort strip around Chott Meriem and Port El Kantaoui are only a few kilometres away.
