Al Khānkah lies in Qalyubia governorate, northeast of Cairo, where the green, irrigated land of the southern Nile delta meets the drier ground toward the eastern desert. From above, the town forms a dense cluster of streets surrounded by fields and canals, with roads linking it to the capital and nearby towns.
Its name comes from a khanqah, a Sufi lodge founded here in the Mamluk period, around which the settlement grew. The older core has tight, irregular streets, while newer development spreads outward in more regular blocks.
