Al Mayādīn Map Poster & Print
Al Mayādīn lies on the Euphrates in eastern Syria, downstream from Deir ez-Zor. From above the town follows the river closely. A band of housing and streets runs along the bank, with a narrow strip of irrigated fields on the floodplain and the pale open desert beyond.
A short distance from the town stand the remains of Rahba Castle, a medieval fortress on a rise overlooking the Euphrates valley. It is one of the most recognisable historic sites in the region. The river has supported settlement here for a very long time, and the town grew as a local market and farming centre.
An Al Mayādīn map poster is a study of a river settlement at its simplest. The Euphrates curves through the frame, the town hugs its banks in a linear pattern, and the fields and desert fall away on either side. The composition is spare, calm and strongly horizontal.

Floodplain fields
A thin strip of cultivated land lines the river. Its small, irregular plots form a green belt between the built-up area and the desert.
Rahba Castle
The medieval fortress stands on higher ground near the town, overlooking the valley, a landmark that anchors the area's long history.
