Alba lies in southern Piedmont on the right bank of the Tanaro river. From above, its historic centre is easy to pick out: a compact, rounded core of narrow streets inside the line of the old walls, now traced by a ring of wider roads. The town grew from the Roman settlement of Alba Pompeia.
Beyond the ring, the town spreads towards the river and into the surrounding hills. The Langhe rise to the south and the Roero lie across the Tanaro to the north. Outside the town, the map fills with winding roads that follow ridges between vineyards.
An Alba map poster shows a small town that is widely known. Alba is famous for its white truffles and the autumn fair built around them. It is also the home of the Ferrero confectionery company, and its old centre once had many medieval tower houses.

Tanaro river
The river runs along the northern side of town and gives the map a broad, flowing line that separates Alba from the Roero hills.

In the Langhe to the south, roads wind along the crests of the hills. They create a looping, organic pattern around the town.
