Aleksin stands on the Oka River in the northwest of Tula Oblast, and the river is the first thing you notice on its map. The Oka makes a broad curve through the town, with steep, wooded banks on either side, so the settlement is divided into parts that look toward each other across the water.
The older streets climb up from the river on the high bank, laid out along the slope rather than on a flat grid. Newer districts and industrial areas spread out further back, while bridges carry road and railway across the Oka, forming the few fixed lines that hold both sides together.
