Amalner lies in the Jalgaon district of northern Maharashtra, on the banks of the Bori River. The river curves past the town and shapes its older quarter, where temples, ghats and narrow lanes cluster near the water. Away from the bank, the streets spread across flat Khandesh farmland in a more open pattern.
The town has a notable place in Indian business history. Wipro began here in 1945 as Western India Vegetable Products, a maker of cooking oil, before it became one of the country's largest technology companies. Amalner is also known for the Sant Sakharam Maharaj temple and its annual fair on the riverbank.
