Ambaji lies in Banaskantha district in northern Gujarat, among the southern hills of the Aravalli range near the Rajasthan border. From above, the town is shaped by its setting: streets gather in a small valley, main roads follow the low ground between hills, and forested slopes surround the built-up area on most sides.
The town grew around the Ambaji temple, dedicated to the goddess Amba and counted among the Shakti Peethas. It draws very large numbers of pilgrims, particularly during the Bhadarvi Poonam fair. Nearby, Gabbar hill is also an important pilgrimage site, reached by steps and a ropeway.
