Amparafaravola is a town in the Alaotra-Mangoro region of Madagascar, on the western side of the basin around Lake Alaotra, the country's largest lake. On a map the setting is striking: the town sits between low hills and a wide, flat plain of rice paddies, crossed by irrigation channels and dikes that divide the land into a fine, regular pattern.
The Alaotra basin is often called the rice granary of Madagascar, and agriculture defines the area.
