Anajatuba is in the Baixada Maranhense, a low, flat region of northern Brazil where rivers, lakes and seasonally flooded grasslands define the land. The town is compact, a small cluster of streets on slightly higher ground. From above, the flat country around it is marked by water, and its outline changes with the rainy and dry seasons.
The street pattern is simple: a few main streets, a central square and short cross streets that fade into tracks at the edges. Roads leave the town across the plain toward neighbouring municipalities. Most of the map, though, belongs to lakes, channels and floodplains rather than buildings.
