Andenne lies on the Meuse between Namur and Huy, where the river cuts a deep valley through the Condroz and Hesbaye plateaus. The town follows the right bank, with its older streets packed between the water and the hillside. Newer districts climb the slopes and spread into side valleys, while roads and a railway follow the river.
The town grew around an abbey founded in the seventh century by Saint Begga, and its collegiate church still bears her name. Andenne is known as the city of bears, after a legend of the young Charlemagne killing a bear here, and celebrates it with a carnival every few years.
