Anjiang lies in the Huaihua region of western Hunan, on the banks of the Yuan River, one of the major rivers of the province. From above, the town follows the river where the valley widens slightly, with steep hills rising on both sides. The water shapes everything: the streets run along it and the bridges cross it.
The older part of town is close to the river, where narrow lanes once served the river trade. Newer districts extend along the roads leading out of the valley. Beyond the built area, the land climbs quickly into forested hills, with rice fields filling the flatter land in the side valleys.
