Aonla is a town in Bareilly district, Uttar Pradesh, on the level alluvial plain of Rohilkhand. On a map the older centre stands out as a tangle of narrow, irregular lanes. It is surrounded by a looser ring of newer streets, and beyond that a pattern of field boundaries and village tracks.
The town is connected with the Rohilla period of the region's past, when it served for a time as a seat of Rohilla power in the eighteenth century. Its name matches the Hindi word for the Indian gooseberry, a fruit grown widely across the surrounding countryside.
Because the land is so flat, an Aonla map poster is all about street pattern rather than terrain. The organic old quarter, the straighter roads added later and the rail and road links towards Bareilly each have a slightly different line character. Together they give the print a layered look.
