Arai lies at the western edge of Lake Hamana in Shizuoka, where the brackish lake opens toward the Pacific. Since 2010 it has been part of the city of Kosai. From above it is a thin settlement strung along roads and railway lines, with lake water on one side and coastal flatlands on the other. The line of the old Tōkaidō highway still guides the town's layout.
Arai was a post town on the Tōkaidō in the Edo period, and it is best known for the Arai Checkpoint, or Arai Sekisho. Its surviving building is the only original checkpoint structure left on the route, and travellers between Edo and Kyoto once had to pass through it. The checkpoint stood close to the water, where boats carried people across the lake inlet.
An Arai map poster captures this crossing point. Roads, railway tracks and bridges converge on a narrow band of land, while the shoreline of Lake Hamana cuts soft curves around them.
