Arame is a municipality in the interior of Maranhão, in north-eastern Brazil. The region lies in the transition between the Amazon and the drier landscapes further east, with a mix of forest, pasture and farmland spread across a wide, lightly populated area.
The town itself is compact. From above, it forms a simple grid of streets on fairly level ground, with a central area where the main roads meet and a looser fringe of houses and plots towards the edges.
