As Salţ lies in the Balqa highlands of Jordan, northwest of Amman, where the land starts to fall away toward the Jordan Valley. The old town is built across three steep hills around a narrow valley. Its map is a web of winding roads, short lanes and staircases that follow the contours rather than a grid. Density is high in the centre and thins out toward the hilltops.
In the late Ottoman period As Salţ was the most important town east of the Jordan River, and merchants built houses of local yellow limestone with arched windows and domes. In 2021 the town was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List for its architecture and its tradition of urban hospitality. An As Salţ map poster reflects the closeness of this hillside fabric.
Stairways link the lower market streets with homes higher up, while the main roads wind around the hills in long curves. Newer districts spread over the neighbouring ridges. In a black-and-white print, the curving roads and tight clusters of streets give a strong sense of the terrain, even without contour lines.
