Astara lies at the southern tip of Azerbaijan on the Caspian coast, directly across the Astarachay river from the Iranian town of the same name. On the map the river is a thin but important line. Azerbaijani Astara lies to the north and its Iranian twin to the south, with a border crossing linking the two.
The town occupies a narrow coastal strip between the sea and the wooded slopes of the Talysh Mountains. Its streets run roughly parallel to the shore, and the coastal road heads north toward Lankaran. The humid, subtropical climate supports tea plantations and citrus orchards, which appear as small fields on the lower hillsides.
Astara is an important link on the North–South Transport Corridor, with road and rail connections crossing into Iran. An Astara map poster shows sea, mountain and border in a single compact frame.
