Attili lies in the West Godavari area of Andhra Pradesh, in the fertile delta formed by the Godavari river. From above the land is almost perfectly flat. The town is a cluster of streets and houses within a wide expanse of paddy fields, and irrigation canals and roads cross the landscape in long, straight lines.
The Godavari delta is one of the most important rice-growing regions in India, fed by an extensive canal network built in the nineteenth century. Around Attili the rhythm of the map follows this system: canals run beside roads, villages line their banks, and fields fill every gap between them.
An Attili map poster shows a place whose shape comes from water management. The town itself is modest, with a denser centre and lanes that loosen toward the edges. What makes the map distinctive is the network around it, a geometry of canals and embankments in the delta plain.
