Attock City, known as Campbellpur until 1978, grew in the British period as a planned town and cantonment. Its core still has straight roads and a regular layout, with wider spaces for official buildings and military areas. Around this core, newer neighbourhoods spread more loosely toward fields and the main roads.
The city sits on a plain in the northwest of Punjab. Not far away, the Kabul River flows into the Indus, where the historic Attock Fort stands above the water. The fort was built under the Mughal emperor Akbar in the sixteenth century to guard the river crossing. The bridges there remain an important link between Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
To the south, the low hills of the Kala Chitta range rise above the plain. An Attock City map poster focuses on the town itself, with its colonial streets and the roads that lead toward the rivers, the fort and the hills.
