Ax 3 Domaines lies in the Ariège department in the eastern Pyrenees, on the mountainside above the spa town of Ax-les-Thermes. From above, the town fills a narrow junction of valleys, while the ski area spreads out high above it across a plateau and the slopes behind. A long gondola links the two, drawing a straight line from the valley floor up the mountain.
The Plateau de Bonascre, at the heart of the ski area, has hosted stage finishes of the Tour de France. On the map the road to it winds up the mountainside in a series of hairpins, a very different line from the direct route of the gondola.
