Aytos lies in southeastern Bulgaria, northwest of Burgas. It sits where the hills of the eastern Balkan foothills drop to the lowland that runs toward the Black Sea. From above, the town's north side presses against rising, wooded ground, while its southern streets spread out more loosely toward open farmland.
The name is usually traced to the Greek word for eagle, and a medieval fortress once stood on the heights above the town. Today a large park climbs the hillside and forms a green band along the northern edge of the map. Streets in the centre are irregular and older, and they give way to a more regular pattern farther out.
An Aytos map poster shows a town clearly shaped by its terrain: hill to the north, plain to the south, and a centre where the two meet. The contrast between wooded slope and open fields gives the drawing depth, even in a strictly black and white design.
