Bābol lies on the humid Caspian plain of Māzandarān, a short distance inland from the sea. The Babolrud river flows north through the city toward the coast at Babolsar. From above, it shapes the street pattern: the older districts gather along its banks, and newer neighbourhoods extend outward in denser, more regular blocks.
The land around the city is one of Iran's most fertile regions. Rice paddies and orchards press close to the edges of town, and the foothills of the Alborz range rise to the south. Bābol is also known for its universities and medical schools, which draw students from across northern Iran.
