Baishishan lies in the hills of central Jilin Province in northeast China. It is an area of wooded ridges and narrow river valleys between the Songnen Plain to the west and the Changbai Mountains to the east. The town fills the valley floor, and the map shows streets arranged along the river and the road rather than spreading in every direction.
The railway and main road follow the valley too, and together they give the town a linear shape. Blocks of apartments and workshops line the flat ground, and the slopes rise directly behind them. Smaller roads leave the valley through side channels toward villages in the hills.
