Bakıxanov is a settlement in the Sabunçu district of Baku, on the Absheron Peninsula east of the city centre. It is named after Abbasgulu Bakikhanov, the nineteenth-century Azerbaijani historian and writer. From above, it looks like a typical Baku suburb: blocks of flats, low private houses behind courtyard walls, and wide roads connecting it to the rest of the capital.
What sets the map apart is the surrounding landscape. The Absheron Peninsula has been an oil region for well over a century, and fields of wells, pipelines and service roads cover large areas nearby.
