Bandar Baharu is the southernmost district of Kedah, where the state meets Penang and Perak. On the map, it is low, flat country. Fields, plantations and small settlements fill the landscape, and rivers wind towards the Strait of Malacca. The Kerian river forms part of the boundary to the south.
The district is mostly rural. Small towns and kampungs are connected by roads that run across the plain between agricultural plots. It sits close to the fast-growing mainland side of Penang, but its own map is much quieter. It is defined more by water and fields than by dense streets.
