Banganapalle is in Andhra Pradesh's Nandyal district, in the dry, open country of Rayalaseema. The town has a dense centre of narrow streets and closely packed buildings. Main roads leave it in several directions toward neighbouring towns, and beyond the last houses the pattern quickly gives way to fields, orchards and water tanks.
The name is known far beyond the region. Banganapalle gives its name to one of India's best-known mango varieties, large and golden-skinned, grown widely in this area. The town was also the seat of a small princely state until 1948, and its older quarter still holds the centre of the map.
