Bānsbāria lies on the western bank of the Hooghly river, north of Kolkata in Hooghly district, West Bengal. From above the town is long and narrow. It stretches along the river, with a railway and main roads running parallel to the bank and a dense web of lanes filling the space between them.
The town is best known for the Hangseshwari Temple, a nineteenth-century temple with a distinctive cluster of tall, lotus-bud towers that is unlike most other temples in Bengal. The riverside around Bānsbāria has a long history of settlement, and the area also shares in the industrial past of the Hooghly belt.
A Bānsbāria map poster is organised by the river. The Hooghly curves along one side of the sheet as a broad, calm band, and the town's streets follow its line in narrow strips.
