Baolong lies in the far east of Chongqing municipality, in the mountainous country around Wushan and the Three Gorges of the Yangtze. The terrain is steep and deeply cut. Settlements here have to fit themselves into valleys and onto terraces, and roads climb in tight bends.
The town's streets follow the shape of the land rather than any grid. They run along the valley floor, bend with watercourses and climb the slopes in short, twisting connections. Terraced fields and forested ridges fill the rest of the landscape.
