Barra do Choça lies on the high plateau of south-western Bahia, not far from the larger city of Vitória da Conquista. The area is higher and cooler than much of north-eastern Brazil, and it is known as coffee country. Plantations and smallholdings cover the rolling ground around the town.
The urban area is compact. Its streets form an irregular grid that is densest around the centre, and a few roads lead out toward the rural districts and neighbouring towns. At the edges the blocks become lighter and more spread out, and gradually give way to the pattern of the fields.
