Baruun-Urt is the capital of Sükhbaatar Province in eastern Mongolia, set on the open steppe that covers much of the country's east. From above, the town is a compact grid of streets and blocks, surrounded by grassland that stretches toward the horizon with only a few roads and tracks crossing it.
As a provincial centre, Baruun-Urt serves a large, sparsely populated area of herders and small settlements. Mining has also shaped the local economy.
