Basking Ridge sits in the hills of Somerset County, and the map shows it right away. There is no grid here. Country roads curve along ridges and valleys, cul-de-sacs branch off into wooded plots, and golf courses and open land fill the space between them. The old village centre is a short run of streets where several main roads meet.
The village has a well-known Revolutionary War story. In December 1776, American general Charles Lee was captured by British dragoons at a tavern in Basking Ridge. For centuries a huge white oak stood in the churchyard of the Basking Ridge Presbyterian Church and was one of the oldest trees in the region. It was taken down in 2017 after it died.
A Basking Ridge map poster shows suburban New Jersey at its most organic. Lines loop and fork across the sheet, and open land to the south hints at the Great Swamp lowlands beyond the township. The result is a soft, flowing composition that reads almost like a leaf's veins.
