Beni Saf lies on the Mediterranean coast of western Algeria, in Aïn Témouchent province. The town is built on steep ground above the sea. On the map, streets zigzag down the slopes toward the harbour, and the coastline cuts a clear edge across the design, with bays and headlands on either side.
The town grew around its port and around iron ore mining in the hills behind it. Today, Beni Saf is known mainly for fishing, and its harbour is one of the notable fishing ports on this part of the coast. Offshore to the west is the small island of Rachgoun, near the mouth of the Tafna River.
