Bentley lies just north of Doncaster in South Yorkshire, across the River Don from the town centre. On a map the river and its flood-plain form a clear southern boundary, and the town fans out northward in a dense grid of terraced streets, later estates and a few main roads.
For most of the twentieth century Bentley was a mining community, built around Bentley Colliery, which closed in 1993. Much of the housing dates from the colliery era, and the street layout still shows how the town grew to house miners and their families. Since then, former industrial land has been turned into green space.
A Bentley map poster brings out that working-town structure. The terraces form a fine, repeating pattern, the main roads run toward Doncaster, and the Don and its low-lying land set an open edge along the south.
