Bequia is the largest of the Grenadines belonging to Saint Vincent, a short ferry ride south of the main island. It is small and hilly, with a coastline broken into headlands and bays. The feature that stands out most from above is Admiralty Bay on the west side, a deep, sheltered inlet that has made Bequia a natural stop for sailing yachts.
Port Elizabeth, the main settlement, lines the head of the bay with a waterfront path, small shops and the ferry dock. The island has a long tradition of wooden boatbuilding and seafaring. It is also one of the few places in the world where limited traditional whaling is still permitted under international rules, a practice that goes back to the nineteenth century.
Roads are few and follow the hills, linking Port Elizabeth with beaches and small communities around the island. A Bequia map poster frames the island with plenty of water around it. The bite of Admiralty Bay and the smaller coves on the windward side then carry the composition, much as the harbours shape life on the island.
