Bettendorf is one of the Quad Cities, on the Iowa bank of the Mississippi River next to Davenport. At this point the river flows mostly east to west, so the waterfront forms a long horizontal edge along the bottom of the map. The Interstate 74 bridge crosses to Moline in Illinois.
The city is named after William and Joseph Bettendorf, whose company built railway cars here in the early twentieth century. The older, more regular streets are in the low area near the river. Above the bluffs, later neighbourhoods spread out with curving streets, parks and schools.
