Betūl lies on a plateau in the Satpura range in southern Madhya Pradesh. From above, the town is compact, with an older, denser commercial area and newer neighbourhoods spreading outward along the main roads. Around the edge of town, farmland and wooded hills begin quickly, giving the map a clearly defined boundary.
The town is the headquarters of Betul district, which is heavily forested and is home to a large Gond and Korku population. The source of the Tapti River is associated with Multai, in the same district. The railway line between Itarsi and Nagpur passes through the town.
