Bhola is the main town of Bhola Island, the largest island in Bangladesh, which lies in the wide estuary where the Meghna reaches the Bay of Bengal. On the map, the town is a compact cluster of streets surrounded by paddy fields, ponds and waterways. The broad channels of the river are never far away.
The island's shape keeps changing as rivers deposit and wash away land. New chars, or silt islands, form in the estuary, and older banks erode. The region also carries a painful memory: the 1970 Bhola cyclone, one of the deadliest storms on record, struck this coast.
