Biarritz sits on the Atlantic coast of the French Basque Country, and its map is defined by the shoreline. A series of beaches, rocky headlands and small coves line up along the western edge, and the streets of the town are packed tightly behind them, with curving roads following the slopes.
The town became a fashionable resort in the nineteenth century after Empress Eugénie built a villa there, which is now the Hôtel du Palais. Today it is also one of Europe's best-known surfing spots.
