Bīrpur is in Supaul district in northeastern Bihar, on the wide alluvial plain of the Kosi River. It is close to the Kosi Barrage, which spans the river at Bhimnagar just across the border in Nepal, and much of the town's modern growth is tied to the river control and irrigation works built there.
From above, Bīrpur's streets are more regular than those of many surrounding market towns, with longer, straighter roads and clearer blocks. Around it, the land is flat and heavily cultivated, crossed by canals and embankments that record the long effort to manage one of India's most unpredictable rivers.
