Biswanath Chariali is on the north bank of the Brahmaputra in Assam and serves as the headquarters of Biswanath district. Its name comes from the Assamese word chariali, meaning a meeting of four roads. To the south lies the Brahmaputra, one of the widest rivers in Asia, with braided channels, sandbars and river islands that shift over time.
