Björlanda lies on the western side of Hisingen, the large island that forms the northern half of Gothenburg. It sits between the city and the sea. From above, residential streets curve among rocky outcrops and patches of woodland, and the ground gets rougher and more open toward the coast.
The shoreline is broken into small bays, inlets and headlands, with islands and skerries just offshore. It is the typical west-coast landscape of smooth granite and shallow water, and on a map it produces an intricate edge that contrasts with the regular development inland.
