Boksburg sits on the East Rand of Gauteng, part of the Ekurhuleni metropolitan municipality east of Johannesburg. It grew from the gold rush of the late nineteenth century, and the map still carries that history: the town lies along the line of the gold reef, where mining land, railways and industrial zones cut long bands between the residential suburbs.
Water is an unusual feature on this dry plateau. Boksburg Lake lies near the town centre, and several other lakes and dams dot the surrounding area, some of them formed in the hollows left by mining. The town also sits close to O. R. Tambo International Airport, which puts it on the busiest transport corridor in the region.
