Bolvadin is a town in Afyonkarahisar Province, in the highland interior of western Turkey. It lies on a broad plain where the Akarçay river flows toward Lake Eber, a shallow reed-filled lake just to the north-east. On the map the town forms a compact, roughly rounded settlement set amid flat farmland and water channels.
Bolvadin's history reaches back to antiquity, when the site was known as Polybotus, and it has long been a market town for the surrounding plain. The wider Afyonkarahisar region is known for poppy cultivation under licence, and the fields around Bolvadin form part of that patchwork of seasonal crops.
