Brasnorte is a municipality in north-western Mato Grosso, in the transition zone between the Cerrado and the Amazon rainforest. The town is recent and planned. Its map shows a clean grid of wide avenues and regular blocks placed on open ground, with few of the irregularities of older settlements.
Beyond the urban area, the landscape shows how it has been used. Long straight roads divide large agricultural properties, and forest remains as darker masses along rivers and in reserves. The municipality covers a huge area, so the town is a small, precise mark in a very wide territory.
