Brescia lies at the foot of the Alpine foothills, where the hills meet the Po plain. The old town is squeezed between Cidneo hill to the northeast, crowned by a large castle, and a ring of boulevards that follow the lines of the old walls. The regular Roman street plan still shows in the older blocks.
The Roman Capitolium and the Santa Giulia monastery complex are part of a UNESCO World Heritage site, and they sit along the old line of the decumanus. The city has two cathedrals side by side, the round Duomo Vecchio and the later Duomo Nuovo, and the Renaissance Piazza della Loggia is nearby.
