Brown University was founded in 1764 and is one of the oldest universities in the United States. It occupies College Hill in Providence, Rhode Island, a neighbourhood of historic houses and steep streets. The campus is woven into the hill rather than enclosed, with buildings and greens between residential blocks.
On a map, the main green forms a clear rectangle at the top of the hill, framed by older college buildings, with the Van Wickle Gates at its western edge.
